A Commitment to Craft and Community

A Commitment to Craft

and Community

At Amba we believe in preserving craftsmanship and empowering artistry. India’s textile history dates back over 5,000 years. The hand-spun cotton and natural dyes, including indigo, to create hand-loomed fabrics evolved and flourished through various historical periods and later faced challenges during British colonial rule. Currently the textile artisans continue to face challenges due to fast fashion and capitalism. Over 4.3 million textile artisans live below the poverty line. At Amba we believe artisans should not lose their art and become laborers due to demands. We honor the human endeavor behind every piece that is created. Amba serves as a direct connection to India’s rich textile heritage while adapting to contemporary international lifestyles.

Whether you are a seasoned collector or discovering, you are invited to explore and connect with us.

What is Kantha?

Kantha is the type of quilting that is done by the women in West Bengal by repurposing vintage printed saris. The craft is traditional and has been around for hundreds of years as a form of recycling cloth that has been respected as sacred. Fabrics are never thrown away or wasted. In our modern cultures, this idea seems remote but the sentiments continue to be practiced and also repurposed for contemporary use.

No Boxing or Labeling

We don’t like to use buzzwords that box and label everything for the sake of commerce. We love hand-made items that are made with diligence and designs that are expressive and free of constraints. Since every item is made by hand, when you have one, there is no other piece like it anywhere else. They are not replicated or reproduced. Some people call this art and others call it craft. But then, who cares about labels.

Some people call that art and others call it craft. But then, who cares about labels. If you love colors, if you love textures and hand- made textiles, then you must love creating. Creating your own identity. Creating your own ideas, your own spaces and your own unique relationship with the beauty of life. That, is what we like.
